Overview
Valley Brewing Company was a short-lived regional brewery located in Mercedes, Texas, operating from 1957 to 1962. Established during the post-Prohibition expansion of brewing in Texas, the company constructed a modern brewing facility in the Lower Rio Grande Valley and began production in 1961.
Despite completing construction and achieving operational status, the brewery faced financial difficulties that led to its closure shortly thereafter. Its brief existence is well documented through surviving corporate records, newspaper coverage, and physical location evidence.
History
Founding and Early Development (1957–1959)
Valley Brewing Company was incorporated in 1957 and rapidly pursued development of a brewery site in Mercedes. In 1958, the company acquired approximately 1.997 acres from the City of Mercedes, with requirements to construct a brewery and complete improvements within one year.
Construction and Equipment Installation (1959–1960)
Construction progressed through 1959 and 1960, including installation of major brewing systems and bottling equipment. A Cleaver-Brooks Scotch Marine boiler was installed and converted from oil to gas, and financing of approximately $115,000 was secured through loans backed by the property and equipment.
Production and Operations (1961)
By 1961, the brewery reached operational status, with the first documented production and distribution of Valley-made beer occurring in September of that year.
Financial Collapse and Closure (1962)
Operations were short-lived. In 1962, the company defaulted on its financial obligations, leading to foreclosure. The property was sold at trustee sale, and the State of Texas later filed a franchise tax lien, marking the end of Valley Brewing Company.
